Wednesday, September 8, 2010- the progressive jazz band, which is led by German expatriate saxophonist Martin Krusche, will be appearing tonight at the Blue Nile. They are celebrating their latest recording, “Aliens of Extraordinary Ability.” The band features five musicians who are wonderful interpreters of Kruse’s compelling compositions. The group also includes the drummer Paul Thibodeaux, the trombonist Jeff Albert, the trombonist Charlie Halloran, the sousaphonist Jason Jurzak and the baritone sax player Daniel Oestreicher. The show will be broadcast live on WWOZ starting tat 10 PM.

Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey To Play Two Shows Today

Sunday September 5- the “Red Dirt Jazz” band from Tulsa, Oklahoma will perform this afternoon at the Louisiana Music Factory at 4 PM and then this evening at the Blue Nile. The veteran New Orleans drummer Johnny Vidacovich will augment the adventurous quartet for the show on Frenchmen Street. The band has revamped its lineup. Newcomers lap steel guitarist Chris Combs and bassist Jeff Harshbarger join drummer Josh Raymer and keyboardist and founding member Brian Haas.

Is it possible New Orleans has more independent record stores than any city of comparable size in the country? This afternoon, (Saturday, September 4) the sixth outlet for vinyl, local CDs and hard-to-find music opens with a bang. Live music will be presented all day, as well as on Sunday, beginning with Tom McDermott at 1 PM. The rest of the lineup features Blind Texas Marlin, Happy Talk Band, Meschiya Lake, Susan Cowsill (pictured) featuring Brian Henneman of the Bottle Rockets, and concluding with Guitar Lightening Lee at 6 PM.

Gov’t Majik and E.O.E. at Tips

Friday, September 3- the last of the Free Fridays presented by the Tipitina’s Foundation is tonight and it’s going to be a dance party. E.O.E., a hot young band that mixes up funk and hip hop, opens for Gov’t Majik (pictured). I did an e-interview with their leader Bru Bruser that you can search for on the blog. He talks about the band’s unique style and his unusual bass. Tonight will be extra special because the Majik Horns – saxophonist Tim Green and trumpeter Antonio Gambrell- will be in the house.

Thursday, September 2- this evening, two young talents team up for a show at Tipitina’s that will most likely be attended by a majority of returning college students. It’s’s a new generation of musicians for a new generation of music lovers. The leader of Happy Jack Frequency is the saxophonist James Martin who spent most of his high school years in Trombone Shorty’s band, Orleans Avenue. Allen has a deeper resume. He played with the Rebirth Brass Band and has two records out of his own.

Corrine Bailey Rae at the House of Blues

Wednesday evening, September 1, 2010, the British musician who burst on the scene in 2006 will be performing at the downtown club. She is ostensibly a jazz singer, but her music takes forays into pop and soul as well. Rae captivated the world’s attention with her debut album and then got the eye of jazz lovers with her guest turn on Herbie Hancock’s tribute to Joni Mitchell. Rae disappeared from the scene for two years following the death of her husband. Her second album, The Sea, came out earlier this year.

Neslort Appears Tuesday Night at the Open Ears Series

The self-described primordial fusion band will be taking over the upstairs of the Blue Nile this evening, August 31, 2010. The band is excited to announce their newest recording, “Mystical Scam,” which is due out in October. The band features Rick Trolsen, the leader on trombone, Larry Sieberth on keys, Tim Robertson on Guitar, Matt Perrine on bass, Boyanna Trayanova on drums, and Kyle Cripps on tenor and soprano Sax.

Free Music on Lafayette Square

This afternoon, the non-profit foundation Rebuilding Together presents the Fifty for Five celebration. Artists scheduled to perform are the George French Band featuring Germaine Bazzle, the Tremé Brass Band, Anders Osborne (pictured- photo by John McCusker) and the World Classic Rockers featuring members of Santana, Journey, Boston, Steppenwolf, Toto and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Don’t ask me why this “supergroup” is on the bill, but they WILL play “Freebird” without the irony. The event goes from 2-8 PM.

Eiffel Society Opens This Evening on St. Charles Avenue

The glass and steel structure that towers above St. Charles Avenue has had numerous incarnations. When it first opened, it was a high-end restaurant that featured cutting edge cuisine. For several years it was the home of the Red Room, an elegant nightclub. More recently, social aid and pleasure clubs have started their parades through the streets of Central City by strutting down the long entrance ramp to the beat of brass bands.

Now the building, which was originally part of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, enters it latest phase. It is a collaborative effort between nationally renowned Chef Ian Schnoebelen, mixologist Alan Walter, the art collective known as the Life is Art Foundation and the musician Kevin O’Day.

O’Day is the Talent Programmer for the Eiffel Society and he promises eclectic, top-quality music from the city of New Orleans and around the country. The guitarist Todd Duke is playing tonight. Every Wednesday will be Latin night with the percussionist Michael Skinkus and featuring Fredy Omar twice a month. O’Day, an acclaimed drummer, will lead the house band, called the Eiffel Society Jazz Band, on Thursdays. The schedule for the coming months features such standout players as Russell Batiste, Mike Dillon, Walter “Wolfman” Washington, James Andrews and Johnny Vidacovich. The rising Hip-Hop Star Freddie Gibbs will perform during the weekend of the Voodoo Music Experience. The music starts tonight at 7 PM.

Alvin “Youngblood” Hart to Join the Trio Tonight
