The iconic rocker died March 17, 2010 of an apparent heart attack in his adopted home of New Orleans.  Chilton rode to fame as the teenaged lead singer of the Box Tops.  He expertly channeled the pain and passion of the soul singers he admired in songs like “The Letter.”  During the next phase of his career, he basically invented indie rock before such a genre existed over the course of three albums with Big Star.  Chilton had been living an unassuming presence in New Orleans since relocating to the city in the early 1990s.  He was due to perform with the reunited Big Star at Austin’s SXSW music conference in Austin this weekend.
