Shannon Powell and the Preservation Hall Stars

One of my favorite things about the Nickel-a- Dance series, which is being held at the Maison on Frenchmen Street on successive Sundays this month, is the chance to hear bands that I don’t usually catch at their regular gigs.  This past Sunday, the drummer tore it up with his all-star ensemble.  The band features such stalwarts as Ronnell Johnson on trombone, Charlie Gabriel on clarinet, Mark Braud on trumpet and vocals, Roland Guerin on upright bass, Christian Winther on sax and Ricky Monie on keys Powell also does some singing and leads the band with a laid back ebullience.  They play tonight at Preservation Hall on St. Peter Street in the French Quarter.
