Los Hombres Calientes, the ensemble that catapulted trumpeter Irvin Mayfield to the top of the local heap, has been on his back burner since Katrina. With his duties as “Cultural Ambassador,†New Orleans Public Library’s board chairman and his work with the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, that is understandable. This week, the music of Los Hombres Calientes returns to the public with six shows, all benefits, at Mayfield’s club in the Royal Sonesta Hotel. Bill Summers, the veteran percussionist who co-founded the group with Mayfield and Jason Marsalis, is not expected to appear. But many of Mayfield’s musical colleagues including Marsalis, bassist David Pulphus and trumpeter Leon Brown will be on the bandstand.
